Как сообщает министр науки и новых технологий Южно-Африканской Республики Наледи Пандор, у африканцев довольно высокие шансы обогнать Австралию в погоне за тем, чтобы стать площадкой для установки самого мощного радиотелескопа, рассказывает Reuters. Международный комитет провозгласит победителя уже через два года. Победившая страна примет на свою территорию мощнейший аппарат Square Kilometre Array, который оценивается в полтора миллиарда евро, он будет в пятьдесят раз чувствительнее и в десять тысяч раз быстрее какого-либо существующего в настоящее время телескопа.
Радиотелескоп мог бы предоставит невероятные возможности для повышения технического и научного развития страны. В том случае, если этот телескоп получит Африка, половина из трех тысяч антенн, которые являются его составляющими, будет расположена на периферии Карнарвона, а вторая половина будет распределена по другим восьми странам Африки. Карнарвон был указан по причине отсутствия там значительного количества сотовых аппаратов и различных вещательных передатчиков, негативно влияющих на функциональные возможности телескопа. Предполагается, что такой аппарат ускорит изучение развития Вселенной, начиная с момента "большого взрыва". Радиотелескоп начнет использоваться в 2022 году и будет эксплуатироваться в течение пятидесяти лет.
