Океанографы из Германии первыми в мире увидели, как в Антарктиде разламывается айсберг гигантских размеров и весом свыше четырехсот миллионов тонн. Ученым Института Альфреда Вегенера в Бременхавене было известно заранее о том, где может случиться разлом, поэтому они неподалеку от этого места разместили микрофоны и приборы для прослушивания, благодаря которым удалось записать треск и грохот огромной силы, сопровождавшие разлом, а также звуки паники, издаваемые напуганными морскими млекопитающими и птицами.
Наблюдение за разламывающимся айсбергом велось с полярной станции «Ноймайер», находящейся на расстоянии в десять километров от огромного айсберга длиной в 54 километра, который получил название B-15-K.
В течение девяти часов айсберг B-15-K ударялся о береговую линию, в результате чего на нем появился двухкилометровый разлом. Каждый из ударов о побережье был такой силы, какая бывает при взрыве взрывчатки весом десять тонн.
Разломившийся айсберг когда-то был одним целым с огромной массой льда, название которой Ледовый Шельф Роса. Этот ледник площадью свыше 11 000 кв.км. еще в 2000 году откололся от берега и дрейфует в настоящее время на юг.
