Казахстанское руководство федерацией футбола решило не продлевать контракт с Берндом Шторком, главным тренером национальной футбольной команды Казахстана. Такое решение было продиктовано неудачами сборной в играх отборочного европейского турнира (ЕВРО-2012). Задача, поставленная перед командой (набрать как минимум 3 очка за четыре официальных матча) не была выполнена. Сборная Казахстана по футболу потерпела подряд четыре поражения.
Работа Шторка в Казахстане началась летом 2008 г. Тогда, малоизвестный тренер откликнулся на предложения возглавить молодёжную сборную страны и футбольный клуб «Алма-Ата».
Первый матч, в роли исполняющего обязанности наставника национальной сборной, Шторк провёл с англичанами в октябре 2008 г. На стадионе Уэмбли. Матч был проигран со счётом 1:5, но казахские футболисты смогли больше половины игры продержать свои ворота «не распечатанными». Со Штоком был заключён, на 2009 год, полноценный контракт, продлённый и на 2010 год.
Но игра у сборной в 2010 году явно не удалась: казахские футболисты уступили сборным Австрии, Турции, Бельгии и Германии, не забив в ворота противников ни одного мяча и, пропустив в свои ворота 10 мячей. Статистика оказалась удручающей и, скорее всего, оказала влияние на решение Исполкома федерации отказаться от услуг немецкого тренера.
