Ватикан канонизировал первую святую из Австралии – монахиню Мэри Маккиллоп.
Церемония канонизации состоялась под руководством главы католической церкви Бенедикта XVI на площади у собора Святого Петра. На мессу собралось приблизительно 50 тысяч человек. Сама же церемония транслировалась с площади австралийским телевидением в прямом эфире.
Монахиня и учительница Мэри Маккиллоп умерла в 1909 году. Большую часть своей жизни монахиня посвятила детскому образованию, преимущественно, для «низов» общества. Она открыла несколько школ под крышей католического монашеского ордена («Сёстры св. Иосифа и св. Сердца»), основателем которого сама же и являлась.
Процесс канонизации – не скор. Относительно Мэри Маккиллоп, он начался ещё в 1925 году и продолжался, без малого, целое столетие. В 1995 г. монахиню причислили к лику блаженных. Но, чтобы причислить её к лику святых, церкви необходимо было признать, как минимум, два чуда, совершённых Мэри Маккиллоп.
Первым чудом Ватикан признал излечение от лейкемии семидесятидвухлетней Вероники Хопсон в 1961 году, произошедшем при заступничестве Мэри Маккиллоп. С её же помощью состоялось и второе исцеление от рака мозга и лёгких Кэйтлин Эванс в 1993 году.
Одновременно с Мэри Маккиллоп, канонизировали еще пять святых - из Польши, Испании и Канады.
